Salman’s Big Allegation on South Audience: True?

Salman Khan recently spoke about the difference in audience dynamics between South Indian cinema and Bollywood in a press meet for his new film Sikandar. He pointed out how South Indian movies such as Pushpa, RRR, and KGF have been able to attain humongous success in Hindi-speaking areas, but Bollywood movies fail to achieve similar success in the South.

In Salman’s opinion, this inequality arises due to the intense fan allegiance that South audiences possess toward their actors, and which becomes hard for Bollywood movies to tap into that audience.

Salman stressed that producing big-budget films involves not only star appeal but good stories that connect with the masses. He admitted Bollywood has not provided mass-appeal movies consistently in recent times, as against South Indian films that concentrate on big storytelling and emotional depth.

While productions such as Ramayana provide grounds for inter-industry collaboration, Bollywood must improve content to match the gap. The actor also highlighted logistical issues, including the small number of theatres in India, which limits revenue potential.

He indicated that expanding theatre numbers to 20,000–30,000 could alter the dynamics, making cross-industry partnerships more feasible. Though Salman’s comments are valid, the problem is more than just infrastructure.

South Indian cinema works because it provides bigger-than-life experiences that thrill audiences pan-India. Bollywood will have to focus on new ideas and good mass entertainers if it wants to tap the South market. Content is the only way to attain real pan-Indian success.
