Sholay Universe? Sequels and Spin-Offs of Iconic Classics

Films like Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Shaan, and Shakti remain deeply rooted in popular memory. Their stories and characters have stayed alive across generations, shaping the cultural fabric of Hindi cinema.

Now, those iconic characters may be set for a major revival. The makers are planning to extend their legacy through sequels, spin-offs, and new storytelling formats aimed at younger audiences.

Recently, Shehzad Sippy, nephew of legendary filmmaker Rajesh Sippy, revealed plans to expand Sippy Films into a modern franchise-driven ecosystem.

The banner’s library includes landmark titles like Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Sholay (1975), Shaan (1980), and Shakti (1982). These films not only defined eras but also introduced characters that continue to resonate in popular culture.

Speaking from the US, Shehzad said he has been working on this vision for nearly a decade. His approach is inspired by global studio models where iconic characters become long-term creative and commercial assets.

He cited Peter Cuneo and his role in transforming Marvel before its acquisition by Disney as a key influence behind this strategy.

While action-driven titles like Sholay, Shaan, and Seeta Aur Geeta form the core identity of the banner, Shehzad revealed that the first project will be an animated series. It will be based on a character from an existing IP, though the identity remains undisclosed.

The animated project is expected to release in September or October. Alongside this, a second project has already been locked.

This second venture is a theatrical film that is currently in pre-production. It is planned as a franchise, possibly serving as a spin-off or prequel to an existing IP, with shooting expected to begin in October.

With these developments, fans are excited about seeing beloved characters return in new forms. The key question now is whether these reimagined versions will connect with audiences the way they once did.
