Filmmaker Exposes Truth About Metro…In Dino!

With films like Thug Life, Sitaare Zameen Par, and Metro In Dino rolling out heavy promotions and back-to-back interviews, many people are beginning to ask the same question: are these promotions really necessary?

While this thought crosses many minds, filmmaker Hansal Mehta seems to be one of the few from the industry who has openly addressed it.

In a strongly worded tweet, he questioned whether such promotions actually work. According to him, it’s the same 10 questions being recycled across interviews, the same fancy outfits, the same staged events. But do they really impact how many people go to watch the film?

He asks a valid question- shouldn’t the trailer be the main thing that attracts the audience?

Mehta pointed out that PR agencies, costume designers, event planners, influencers, sponsors, red carpets, press conferences, paid ‘reviews’, and social media fluff all contribute to creating a perception of success. But the reality, he says, is often far from it.

This makes us question if these promotional efforts truly influence audience behaviour, or are they just a glamorized echo chamber?

That’s not to say these events are totally useless. Interviews, major events, and promotions do get people talking about the actors and increase awareness about the film, which is still one step closer to getting audiences to the theatre or streaming platform.

However, excessive promotion can also backfire. Overexposure and repeated appearances can begin to annoy fans, possibly even pushing them away from watching the film.

In such cases, a balance is essential. More creative, strategic, and emotionally resonant promotion tactics could make a deeper impact on viewers than just doing the same old formula.

As Hansal Mehta rightly said, without innovation, it all becomes a repetitive cycle, used and reused for every film.
