Is Audience Ready for Bold, Raw, Real Take on Love?

As Dhadak 2 inches closer to its August 1 release, filmmaker Karan Johar’s endorsement of debutant director Shazia Iqbal has sparked conversation—but not necessarily confidence.

While Johar has a commendable track record of backing women directors like Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde, the announcement feels more like a carefully curated PR gesture than an organic creative evolution.

Touted as a film tackling caste, love, and identity, Dhadak 2 comes with high claims of emotional honesty and sensitive treatment.

However, considering the legacy of the first Dhadak—a film criticized for sanitizing the complexities of caste—there’s room for skepticism.

Will this sequel truly confront these issues head-on, or will it simply drape them in aesthetic melancholy, much like mainstream Bollywood’s usual tokenism?

The pairing of Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi adds novelty, but it remains to be seen whether their chemistry can transcend casting buzz and contribute meaningfully to the narrative.

The promotional discourse already feels heavy on intent and light on substance.

Words like “bold” and “poignant” are being thrown around, but actual glimpses into how the film handles these themes remain absent.

Johar’s vocal support of “female leadership” is welcome, but it’s fair to question whether Dhadak 2 will elevate Shazia Iqbal as a storyteller with her own voice—or merely fit her into an existing Dharma template dressed as progressive cinema.

The real test begins when the film moves from headlines to the screen.
