Fans waiting for Vicky Kaushal’s much-talked-about project Mahavatar will have to be patient a little longer. Initially slated for a Christmas 2026 release, the big-budget film has now been pushed to Independence Day 2027, according to a report from Peeping Moon.
The delay is mainly due to scheduling and production hurdles. Filming is now expected to begin in April 2026, making it impossible to finish the project in time for its earlier date. Adding to this, Vicky Kaushal is also tied up with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, which requires extensive physical preparation and a six-month shoot.
Post-production for Mahavatar is expected to be equally time-consuming, given the heavy use of CGI and VFX planned by the makers. Directed by Amar Kaushik and backed by Maddock Films, the project is being mounted on a grand scale.
The new date creates a direct clash with Stree 3, another Maddock production. However, industry insiders suggest Stree 3 might move to another slot, since Dinesh Vijan’s Horror Comedy Universe has already seen changes in its production timeline.
Meanwhile, Christmas 2026 remains open. This vacant window has sparked speculation about which big film could grab the slot. Some trade circles hint that Shah Rukh Khan’s King could be a contender, though no official confirmation has come yet.
Despite the delay, analysts see Maddock’s decision as a wise move. By prioritising quality and scale, the makers want to avoid the mistakes of films like Adipurush (2023), which suffered due to rushed execution. With Vicky Kaushal riding high after the ₹600 crore success of Chhaava, expectations are sky-high. If done right, Mahavatar could become a turning point for Maddock Films’ transition into big-budget spectacles.
