Endgame Returns, Takes Down Baahubali Record

Seven years later, Avengers: Endgame has returned to Indian theatres and picked a rather interesting film to knock off the record books.

According to early estimates, Endgame Encore collected around Rs 7.25 crore net on its opening day in India. More importantly, it has surpassed the previous re-release opening record of Rs 5 crore held by SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Epic.

That makes the comeback more than a nostalgia play. Endgame is a film audiences have already watched multiple times with its biggest moments etched into pop culture. Yet thousands of viewers still chose to return to theatres for another big-screen experience.

The Encore version also comes with four minutes of exclusive footage, along with the added attraction of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. That gives Marvel fans something beyond simply watching the same film again.

And this is where the record becomes interesting. A seven-year-old Hollywood blockbuster has walked back into India, crossed a record set by a Rajamouli film, and immediately made its re-release a box-office story of its own.

Endgame may belong to 2019, but the opening shows that the Marvel phenomenon still has plenty of life left in it.
