Obsession Struggles in India: Spider-Man the Next Saviour?

It seems like Hollywood will have to wait a bit longer for a big hit in India. Apart from The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael, none of the Hollywood movies this year have managed to cross the 30 Crore mark at the Indian box office. The new teen horror movie Obsession opened with around 1 Crore on its first day. Despite internet hype and mostly positive reviews, its final collection might wrap up under 10-15 Crore.

Here is a look at how all the Hollywood movies have done on their opening days so far.

At the top, The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1) and Michael (April 24) tied with a strong 4 Crore opening day, which was helped by 1.5 Crore from early previews. The Devil Wears Prada 2 finished its Indian box office run at 31 Crore, while Michael ended at 75 Crore. Close behind was Project Hail Mary (March 20), which opened at 2.9 Crore and finished with a huge 89 Crore total.

Looking at other big franchises, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (April 17) opened to 2 Crore and closed at 22 Crore. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 (April 3) started with 0.9 Crore and ended its run at 14 Crore. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (May 22) opened at 0.7 Crore and is tracking toward a 4 Crore final finish.

Obsession (May 29), which was made on a 9.5 Crore budget, opened between 0.5 and 1 Crore, and it faces a tough time growing from here. Mortal Kombat 2 (January 23) and Hoppers (March 6) both opened at 0.5 Crore, wrapping up their time in theaters at 4.5 Crore and 3.8 Crore respectively.

Among the lower openers, 28 Years Later (February 13) and Wuthering Heights (April 17) started at 0.3 Crore, finishing at 2.5 Crore and 1.8 Crore. GOAT (February 27) and The Bride (March 13) opened at 0.25 Crore, ending their runs at 1.2 Crore and 1.1 Crore. Finally, Scream 7 (February 20) opened at 0.2 Crore and closed its quick run at 0.95 Crore.

The months of June and July will see big Hollywood releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, Disclosure Day, and Supergirl. Out of these upcoming movies, only Spider-Man has a real chance to go beyond the 100 Crore mark because of its loyal fanbase in India.
