We are in a time where sequels, even with average or mediocre content, are making huge money. However, this applies mostly to top-tier star categories.
In 2024, we saw two Telugu sequels that became blockbusters by striking the right chord with their target audiences.
The first is ‘Tillu Square,’ a sequel to ‘DJ Tillu.’ The film became a commercial success, and its target audience enjoyed the comedy portions, which met their expectations.
The second is Mathu Vadalara 2, a sequel to the original Mathu Vadalara. Despite an okay second half, it performed exceptionally well with the target audience, particularly the youth and comedian Satya is once again the reason for it.
In both cases, these films, without any tier-1 stars, made the best use of the title branding and the title penetration achieved by the first parts.
Interestingly, both films targeted similar youth audiences. When it comes to youthful comedies or adult-oriented youth entertainers, the target audience tends not to be overly critical. As long as they are entertained to some degree, these films tend to do reasonably well.
