Actor Suriya Draws Ire Of High Court Judge

Tamil actor Suriya has now drawn the ire of Madras High Court Judge for his recent letter of support to the students. It is related to the holding of NEET medical entrance examination.

After a lot of dissents and widespread furore, the NEET exams were conducted across the nation on September 13. A day before, on September 12th, three students from Tamil Nadu committed suicide. They weren’t in a state to attend it due to the pandemic situation.

Suriya released an open letter expressing his anguish over the suicides. In the strongly-worded ‘letter’ he brought in the reference of judges which has hurt the judiciary leading to the latest action. Suriya said that the courts conduct their proceedings via video conferencing but orders the students to go out fearlessly and write the exams. The irony of this decision is what seems to have offended the lawyers.

SM Subrahmaniam, a judge in Madras High Court, has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court asking him to take action on Suriya for the contempt of the court. The way Suriya has put down the court and its judgment are objectionable felt Subrahmaniam.

Meanwhile, Justice N Kirubakaran of Madras High Court has reprimanded the media, movie stars and politicians, to stop glorifying the suicides. He has particularly asked the political parties to avoid giving money to the deceased families. The trend could decrease only when they avoid it, he asserted.
