Before the Indian film industry could recover from the OTT challenges, another major obstacle has arrived in the form of the IPL.
Over the past few years, it has become evident that theaters remain largely empty on IPL match days, especially when teams like CSK, MI, RCB, SRH, or KKR are playing.
With the tournament turning into a cricket festival, its impact on films has been massive, especially on weekends when high voltage matches keep family audiences glued to their screens.
This year, the IPL runs from March 22 to the last week of May, creating a tough situation for filmmakers.
Producers planning releases during this period now face a big dilemma. In Bollywood, several big-budget films have already been postponed. While some claim pending post-production work as the reason, industry insiders believe the IPL is the real factor.
April and May have seen quite a low number of pan-India film releases in the past few years. The IPL craze dominates everywhere, from star promotions to social media trends, making it difficult for films to grab audience attention.
Recently, Anushka Shetty’s film was postponed from the April 18 date, and a top Malayalam star’s movie also changed its release date at the last minute, clearly indicating the IPL effect.
Box office analysts suggest that delaying films during these two months is a smarter move for producers, as a well-timed release later would ensure better business.
However, it is also not advisable for makers to avoid such a lucrative season like the summer period when schools and colleges are shut down. People want entertainment, they want some relief from the heat, and cinema is a great rescue.
So, makers need to create content that can give OTTs and the IPL a run for their money. The films need to be so good that people are forced to come out of their homes to theaters. The fault lies in the films, and it is not always right to blame the IPL.
