Yash to Lokesh: South Declares War on Bollywood

Over the years, various film industries in India have been trying to join hands. Instead of dividing themselves into separate sectors like Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood, etc., there has been a conscious effort to work together and unite.

This unity is often reflected when artists and technicians collaborate across industries and films are made to appeal to audiences from all regions.

However, at times, this seems less like camaraderie and more like a business strategy, and often, a toxic one.

No matter how many insiders claim that the industries are united, there’s clearly an underlying rivalry, especially between Bollywood and the South Indian film industries.

In an attempt to compete with Bollywood, the South has been producing several massive pan-India films that are giving big-budget Bollywood projects a serious run for their money.

Bollywood is known to announce film release dates months in advance. But when South Indian films schedule releases on the same dates, Bollywood often ends up rescheduling its films.

This was seen with Pushpa 2 and Chhaava, both of which were initially planning for a late 2024 release, but Chhaava was eventually postponed.

A similar situation occurred in 2023 with Salaar and Dunki, which led to a box-office clash and an intense fan war.

More recently, Yash’s Toxic and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War are also scheduled for the same release window.

War 2 had announced its release date months ago- 14th August 2025, but now, Rajinikanth’s Coolie, a massive project with high expectations, is also set to release on that date.

South filmmakers need to realize that these internal rivalries may appear to assert power, but in the long run, they hurt the industry. Such clashes limit audience choices and reduce the collective success that Indian cinema could achieve by working in harmony.
