Academy Award-winning composers AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer have joined hands to compose the music for Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious two-part epic Ramayana. A glimpse of their work was revealed through the teaser released last year.
In a recent exclusive interview with Hollywood Reporter, AR Rahman spoke candidly about the creative challenges involved. He described the process of scoring Ramayana as a terrifying experience for both composers due to its cultural and emotional weight.
AR Rahman shared that working on such an iconic subject comes with immense responsibility. He explained that Ramayana holds deep importance across the world, making every musical decision critical and emotionally charged.
Speaking about the teaser, AR revealed that Hans Zimmer first created a soundscape. He then built upon it by adding Sanskrit verses and other musical layers. This blend aimed to respect tradition while offering something fresh.
AR also reflected on the complexity of reimagining a story familiar to almost every Indian. He said the biggest challenge was presenting something new while maintaining authenticity, so it could resonate from India to a global audience.
The composer further revealed that he had to unlearn many conventional ideas associated with Ramayana. This approach helped him absorb its timeless cultural essence while crafting a unique musical identity.
With its growing global appeal and international collaboration, the film is expected to push boundaries for Indian cinema and mythology. Many believe this partnership could open doors for future large-scale global projects.
Ramayana Part 1 is scheduled to release in November 2026, likely during Diwali. It is currently regarded as the most anticipated Bollywood film of the year.
