Rehman Accused of Brahmanical Patriarchy!

It was not only a proud moment when ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ team came together to celebrate the 10-year celebration of the music of the Academy Award-winning movie but also a surprising moment to see AR Rehman’s daughter interviewing him. It’s not the interview that was surprising but the attire of Rehman’s daughter Khatija.

She was seen draped in a black silk sari covering her shoulders and pallu over the head along with a niqab (a veil covering the face of a woman) covering her face. This interview video and Khatija’s attire just revealing her eyes has erupted something like a storm in a teacup. People are accusing AR Rehman of following Brahmanical patriarchy and being a fanatic for limiting his daughter to a burqa. Though she was draping a sari, it was ensured that it served the purpose of wearing a burqa.

Many social media users who were shocked to see her attire said that their respect for Rehman has come down a bit for confining his daughter to a burqa. Questions about his secular stance and his cry when journalist Gouri Lankesh was murdered have been flooding on the social media. Khatija’s sari-clad niqab pic from the 10-year celebration of the music of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is going viral for a different reason, altogether.
