
The season saw the release of Paramount’s glitzy showbiz epic Babylon which also stars Brad Pitt and is aiming for an Oscar entry. It barely made $3.6 million from 3343 venues. The year was good for Universal with Top Gun: Maverick and thriller Smile, but Babylon ended it on a sour note.
Meanwhile, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is nearing the $800 million mark, adding both domestic and global collections.
Avatar: The Way of Water grossed an opening weekend haul of $134.1 million. Jurassic World: Dominion was released on June 10, 2022, to an opening weekend haul of $145 million. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released on May 6, 2022, to an opening weekend haul of $187.4 million. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released on November 11, 2022, to an opening weekend box office haul of $181.3 million.
Avatar 2 sailed to the top of the box office in its 2nd weekend, bringing in a strong $56 million in the U.S. Trade analysts say that this is Cameron’s first $100 million opener and for this movie to have opened that big and only dropped 58% in its second weekend, which is not an alarming sign. It shows that the film has strong legs.
Globally, The Way of Water is already the third highest-grossing film released in 2022, bringing in $855 million — putting it behind only Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion — and is a lock to surpass $1 billion.
