Beautiful Tribute, But Ilaiyaraaja Sues

Of late, we have been seeing the trend of remade songs. Classical melodies and songs are being rehashed by modern filmmakers to create unique tunes.

One such beautiful tribute was seen in Manjummel Boys as the film featured a remixed version of Ilaiyaraja’s Kanmani song. The song is strategically placed to create a cinematic high in the film.

But despite the beautiful gesture by the makers to have a recreation of Ilaiyaraja’s Kanmani song, all they ended up with was a lawsuit.

Incidentally, the legendary musician sued the makers of Manjummel Boys for using his song without permission.

While it is well within his right to serve the legal notice, the legendary musician must have noted that all the team did was give a cinematic tribute to his magical work. This way, his legacy only grows further.

But Ilaiyaraja was having none of it and he sought legal course of action against the makers. This decision is drawing a mixed response from the commoners.
