In a recent interview Malik talked about her affiliations with Belly dancing. Belly Dancer Meher Malik takes pride in her art and feels that belly dancing has a strong Indian connection. In fact, it is strongly believed that belly dancing has its roots in Rajasthan considering that when Egyptians discovered evidence of belly dancing as an art form in Egypt, it was found by the researchers that those dancers were darker skinned, sported colourful clothes and had khol in their eyes.
She also talked about the choreography offers she received from the South and how she felt insulted by the offer of doing an item number for a Tollywood film. She did not take up any of those offers because belly dancing is not for item numbers but a valid art form and it needs to be given the respect it deserves.
