The ongoing 2024 box office season has been a rather dry one for major film industries. However, despite big successes being few and far between Hindi cinema has War 2, Maidaan, and Article 370 which reported good numbers. Tollywood has a Rs 300+ crore grosser in HanuMan and a Rs 100 crore+ grosser in Tillu Square.
Malayalam cinema has been the best-performing industry as Manjummel Boys and Premalu have punched above their weight and kept Malayali cinema in the elite league.
Coming to the worst-performing industry of 2024, it must certainly be Tamil cinema which is struggling even for an average film let alone a big box office hit.
Dhanush’s Captain Miller is their biggest of the year and it supposedly touched the Rs 100 crore mark. However, it is still seen as a loss venture. Then there is Siva Karthikeyan’s Ayalaan which also failed big time. Numbers-wise, both the notable Tamil films of 2024 have grossly failed. Then there’s Rajinikanth’s cameo film Lal Salaam which is a disaster of epic proportions.
The three notable Tamil films of the year are all disasters at the box office, keeping Tamil cinema on the top of the list of worst-performing industries thus far.
