A couple of days ago, Megastar Chiranjeevi made a direct and honest comment on the casting culture in the film industry. He said women must enter the industry with firm principles. According to him, this would prevent others from taking advantage of them.
Soon after Chiranjeevi’s statement, feminist and activist Chinmayi, who is also a playback singer, reacted strongly. She shared her views on social media and addressed the issue in detail.
In her post, Chinmayi wrote that casting couch is rampant in the industry. She said women are often denied roles if they do not offer “full commitment,” a term that carries a very different meaning in cinema.
She explained that people from English educated backgrounds may assume commitment means professionalism. It usually means showing up to work and focusing on the craft. However, she stated that this belief is wrong in the film industry.
Chinmayi added that many men remain in positions of power and feel entitled. According to her, they demand and expect sexual favours from women without hesitation.
Responding directly to Chiru, she said Legendary Chiranjeevi garu comes from a different generation. She noted that actors of that time were friends or family friends with their female co artistes and treated each other with mutual respect.
She also pointed out that today’s girls aspiring to join the industry often come from abroad or strong educational backgrounds. They are well informed and aware of how things work. She concluded by stating that the industry is not a mirror that reflects who you are.
