Kona Venkat used satire to explain the censor experience faced by Comrade Kalyan. Speaking at the film’s press meet, he touched upon the objections raised over words and visuals connected to the film’s Naxal backdrop.
According to Kona Venkat, the censor board objected to the word “Naxal”, so the makers replaced it with “annalu”. But when it comes to the green dress worn by the characters there was no simple solution. A word could be changed, but removing or altering the colour of a costume already captured on screen was not something the makers could casually fix.
Kona’s remarks pointed to the strange practical situations that can arise during certification. If a word is considered objectionable, it can be replaced. But when the objection is about something visible in the frame, the options are more complicated, especially when the film has already been shot.
His comments came against the backdrop of Comrade Kalyan going through the Revising Committee before receiving a UA 16+ certificate. Rather than making a direct complaint about the process, Kona used these examples to underline the kind of hurdles filmmakers can encounter at the final stage.
The “Naxal” to “annalu” change may sound like a small edit, but Kona’s larger point was about how filmmakers sometimes have to find creative ways around censor objections without changing the essence of what they have made.
