Coolie OTT Turns Headache; War 2 Makes It Worse

Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is already one of the most talked-about projects in Tamil cinema.

With a massive budget and sky-high expectations, the film is making headlines even before its release. But now, the producers — Sun Pictures — are facing a tough decision regarding the film’s OTT release window.

Major multiplex chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis want an 8-week gap between the theatrical release and the OTT premiere.

They argue that early streaming affects footfall in theatres and hurts box office collections. These chains have even added penalty clauses in their agreements to discourage early digital releases.

Meanwhile, the OTT platform that has bought Coolie’s digital rights has offered Sun Pictures two options. If the film premieres on OTT just 4 weeks after its theatrical release, Sun Pictures will receive Rs. 130 crores.

But if they agree to an 8-week gap, the payment drops to Rs. 115 crores — a loss of Rs. 15 crores.

This puts Sun Pictures in a tight spot. Choosing the 4-week option gives them more money but risks angering theatre chains, which could impact the film’s screen count or show timings.

Choosing the 8-week window keeps theatres happy but comes at a financial cost.

To make matters even more complicated, Coolie is releasing on the same day as War 2, the most anticipated Spy Universe film starring Hrithik Roshan and NTR.

Both films are aiming for the Independence Day weekend, which could divide the audience — especially in North India — and affect collections.

Fans are eagerly waiting for Coolie, but this behind-the-scenes decision could make a big difference in how much the film earns.

A final call from Sun Pictures is expected soon — and whichever path they choose, it will set an important precedent for big-budget Indian films in the OTT era.
