Vyjayanthi Movies officially announced that Deepika Padukone will not be part of the sequel. The makers cited differences with the actress and her team, without disclosing exact details.

Industry talk suggests that disagreements and excessive demands triggered the fallout. This is not the first time such an issue has arisen. Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga had earlier considered Deepika for Spirit, only to replace her with Triptii Dimri after facing similar problems.

According to Bollywood Hungama, Deepika demanded a 25% hike in her remuneration compared to the first film. She also limited herself to seven working hours per day. For a VFX-heavy film like Kalki, these conditions would have significantly increased costs.

Reports add that Deepika’s team of nearly 25 members requested five-star accommodation and full reimbursement for their stay and meals. Producers reportedly found these demands unreasonable. Despite multiple discussions, she did not soften her stance, forcing the makers to move ahead without her.

The makers now face the challenge of recasting the role of Sumati, which plays a crucial part in the storyline. Names such as Alia Bhatt and Rashmika Mandanna are said to be under consideration, but no final decision has been made. Some of Deepika’s scenes for the sequel were already shot, and it remains unclear whether that footage will be used or scrapped.

With The Raja Saab nearing release and Spirit next on Prabhas’s schedule, Kalki 2 may not go on floors until 2027. This delay gives the team time to confirm a new heroine. However, the optics are damaging for Deepika, as she has now been dropped from two major South Indian films in succession.
