The March box office scenario has changed dramatically after the makers of Toxic decided to postpone the film to June. Dhurandhar 2 will now arrive as a solo release on March 19, giving the film a massive advantage at the Indian box office. What was earlier expected to be a major clash has now turned into a clear runway for Aditya Dhar‘s film.
Toxic was never a big competitor to Dhurandhar 2 in terms of audience craze or hype, but it would have taken at least 25 to 30% of the screens and shows, which will now be given to Dhurandhar 2.
Dhurandhar 2 was already carrying unprecedented buzz, and with no direct competition now in sight, the anticipation around its release has only intensified. Many believe that if the trailer connects well with audiences, the excitement could reach another level.
One of the biggest advantages of the solo release is the increase in screen count. Earlier estimates suggested that Dhurandhar 2 would release on around 4,500 to 5,000 screens in India due to the clash with Toxic. Now, trade analysts say the film could expand to nearly 6,000 screens. Experts predict that the wider release could add nearly Rs. 100 crores more to its initial weekend earnings.
When the clash was ON, it was expected Dhurandhar 2 would take an opening of Rs. 60-65 crores. Since Toxic has run away, Dhurandhar 2 now has the potential to cross Rs. 80 crores net on the first day in the Hindi version, possibly challenging Pushpa 2’s record. Whether it can touch Rs. 100 crores net in Hindi on day one is still a tricky question. It is not impossible, but it will be very tough. The film would need around 60 to 70% occupancy across screens in India, with footfalls of around 60 lakhs to touch Rs. 100 crores net on its first day. However, Dhurandhar 2 is sure to cross Rs. 100 crores net in all languages combined.
Overseas trends are also very impressive. Early pre-sales in North America have already crossed the $100,000 mark nearly two weeks before release, including strong advance bookings for the March 18 premiere shows. If the momentum continues, the film could cross $1 million from premieres alone.
The worldwide gross across all languages will definitely cross Rs. 150 crores and might even touch Rs. 200 crores on its opening day.
