Telugu cinema has built a strong reputation in the Indian film market. Films like Pushpa 2 and Baahubali have even outperformed mainstream Bollywood releases in the Hindi belt.
However, a surprising trend is now being observed in the Telugu states. A Bollywood film is reportedly outperforming a Telugu film in its own primary market.
As per weekend reports, Dhurandhar 2 recorded higher revenues and footfalls than Ustad Bhagat Singh in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from March 21.
The Telugu dubbed version of Dhurandhar 2 was released on Saturday. This gave Ustad Bhagat Singh, which released on March 19, a two-day lead at the box office.
Despite this advantage, Dhurandhar 2 has been earning more since its Telugu version release. The trend has been consistent across the Telugu states.
This situation has surprised many in the trade. A Telugu film starring Pawan Kalyan being overtaken by a Hindi film featuring Ranveer Singh was not widely expected.
What makes it more notable is that this trend was visible in the very first weekend itself. The comparison has quickly become a major talking point.
The current trend suggests that Telugu audiences are prioritising content over star power. Strong storytelling and engaging execution appear to be the key factors driving box office success.
