Dhurandhar OTT Blocked: Costly Blunder from Makers?

Viewers will not be able to watch Dhurandhar: The Revenge on OTT until May this year. The delay follows a decision by B62 Studios Private Limited before the Delhi High Court. The move has now created uncertainty around the film’s digital release plans.

The issue stems from a plea filed by Trimurti Films. The company alleged that Rang De Lal (Oye Oye) was used without authorisation in the film. The matter was recorded by Justice Tushar Rao Gedela during the proceedings.

The court noted that the defendants would remain bound by their undertaking. It also highlighted concerns about potential issues related to digital exploitation. The case has raised questions about content usage and rights management.

Trimurti Films claimed that the original track Oye Oye was reused under the name Rang De Lal. Senior Advocate Swati Sukumar argued that the defendants altered the original work and sound recording for the film.

Swati Sukumar further stated that the defendants benefited from this usage. She claimed that the original owners had not permitted any form of exploitation. She also pointed out that the renamed track did not match the original lyrics.

Senior Advocate Akhil Sibal, representing the defendants, opposed interim relief. He questioned whether relief should be granted despite alleged suppression and concealment by the plaintiff. The argument referred to earlier legal notices involving the same song.

Justice Tushar Rao Gedela described the matter as serious. The court has asked the authorised signatory of Trimurti Films to appear at the next hearing. The focus will be on clarifying disputed documents presented in the case.

The legal battle appears likely to continue for some time. This delay may affect the OTT release of Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Meanwhile, some viewers are content with the extended theatrical run of the film.

However, trade experts have expressed concern about the impact on other releases. A delayed OTT window may also increase the risk of piracy. This could affect digital platforms like JioHotstar, which has acquired streaming rights.

Some social media users have criticised the makers over the song rights issue. Questions have been raised about licensing decisions and financial management. Critics also believe that box office collections may slow down in the coming weeks.
