Film Studio By Balakrishna: Are Studios Viable?

Film Studios used to be hot properties at one time in Tollywood. We have Studios like Ramoji Film City, Annapoorna Studios, Padmalaya, Ramanaidu Studios, Sarathi Studios, and Ramakrishna Studios in Hyderabad.

Most of them suffered mounting losses while few others shut shop due to lack of income.

Only Ramoji Film City and Annapurna Studios were successful even today. Ramakrishna Studios and Padmalaya Studios were almost defunct.

Post-Corona, Film Studios suffered big time. Film Producers especially those who make big films and more films found that shooting in Studios is not economically viable.

Some big producers started leasing huge land parcels on the outskirts of Hyderabad and started erecting sets in those lands.

In some cases, the sets were not disbanded and were given for rent for other films too.

For instance, the Temple set in the Acharya movie was erected in Chiranjeevi’s Kokapet land. The sets were being given for rent for other film shootings as well.

People Media Factory bought land in Aziznagar and constructed five five-floor studios there. Prabhas’s Rajasaab and Teja Sajja’s Mirai were being shot in that studio itself.

Vyjayanthi Movies used the same strategy for their Kalki movie as well. They leased land near Gandipet and erected major sets of the film there. Even though a set or two were also erected in Ramoji Film City, the major sets were erected on their own land.

In 2022, the Allu family announced building Allu Studios in Kokapet on the occasion of Allu Ramalingaiah’s 100th Birth Anniversary. Back then, it was announced that it would be a state-of-the-art film studio and would cater to all the shooting and post-production needs of films.

It was downsized after the trend changed. Only one floor is for the film studio and a multiplex is arriving on the remaining floors. Along with the shooting facility, there is also a small facility for Post-production works.

The entrance of both these entities (studio and multiplex) is planned differently to avoid any disturbance.

In these times of Production housing having their own studios, building a studio is a brave decision by Balakrishna.

The major problem with studios that were defunct and running in losses is that the owners did not invest in big facilities. They do not offer anything great

But then, if Balakrishna invests big and has world-class facilities for shooting and Pre-production, it will still find takers.

We will get an idea when the studio plan is completely revealed.
