When Did Filmmakers Start Fearing Online Trolls?

When did filmmakers start getting so worried about what social media might say? People finding faults with films is nothing new. A film releases, some like it, some dislike it and some will point out every small mistake. That has been happening for decades. Social media has only made the reaction louder and faster.

No film is perfect. Even a blockbuster will have its share of criticism. That does not mean the makers have failed. In fact, genuine criticism can be useful. If audiences point out a weak scene or a mistake, filmmakers can take it seriously, understand what went wrong and make sure they don’t repeat it in the next film.

The problem is when this turns into fear. Making changes simply because a particular section on social media may troll the film is a dangerous way to approach cinema. A filmmaker cannot sit down to write a story while worrying about every possible reaction online.

And making public statements that changes were made because of social media pressure only makes the situation look worse. If the criticism is genuine, accept it. If it is trolling, ignore it. Why give trolls the importance they are looking for?

Filmmakers should listen to criticism, not live in fear of it. Cinema cannot be made by trying to keep social media happy.
