Historic: Chandrayaan-2 Launched And Begins Journey To The Moon

In what can be termed as a historic leap in the Space Research of India, GSLVMkIII-M1 successfully injected Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft into Earth Orbit. Around 16 minutes after lift off Chandrayaan-2 successfully separated from GSLVMkIII and spacecraft will now explore south pole of Moon.

The launch was initially supposed to happen on July 15th but the attempt was aborted due to a technical glitch. ISRO fixed the technical glitch and rescheduled the Chandrayaan-2 launch for July 22 at 2:43 pm. The Chandrayaan-2 mission is India’s second journey to the Moon and its most ambitious and complex space project yet.

In September this year, Chandrayaan-2 will aim to land a rover named Vikram on the Moon, making India the fourth country in the world to do so. Among the experiments the Chandrayaan-2 will carry out include tests to understand the extent of water distribution under the lunar surface.

Earlier, Chandrayaan-1 found evidence of water on the Moon. The orbiter will continue revolving around the Moon for a year, performing experiments to study the satellite’s outer atmosphere.
