The Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) has released a strong legal statement against social media influencers accused of blackmailing producers for money in exchange for positive reviews. They warned that such actions harm a film’s reputation and its box office performance.
IFTPC clarified that it does not oppose free speech or fair criticism but condemned extortion in the name of reviews. The council stressed that fake reviews aimed at threatening producers endanger both the creative and financial stability of the film industry.
The issue is reportedly more widespread in North Bollywood films than in Telugu or South Indian cinema. Some actors and producers have already spoken out against such influencers, but accountability remains weak due to evolving digital laws.
Industry experts believe this move is an important first step. Much will depend on how these measures are enforced. The IFTPC’s warning sends a clear signal to influencers who misuse their platforms for blackmail and fabricated reviews.
