Indian women relatively safe on Web

A report by the United Nations Broadband Commission, ‘Combating Online Violence Against Women & Girls: A Worldwide Wake-Up Call’ had revealed shocking facts about the cyber violence across the globe. According to that, almost three quarters women online are exposed to some form of cyber violence worldwide .

Further it revealed that only 26% law enforcement agencies in 86 countries are taking appropriate action in this issue. However the report said only 35% of women suffered with cyber violence while a larger majority 46.7% had not. About 18.3% were not even aware that they are actually facing the issue.

The report said that India along with Pakistan, Peru, Nigeria, Indonesia and Kenya are the six countries where the majority (67%) felt they could express their opinions safely. However they mentioned that India needs to urgently strengthen its laws related to data privacy, offensive communication through internet and digital communication technology
