International status for Vijayawada Airport?

Andhra Pradesh government had roped in a private consultant to undertake a survey of in-bound and out-bound domestic passenger traffic from Gannavaram airport. After the survey, the state cabinet will clear the proposal to declare Gannavaram as an international airport and sent it to the Union civil aviation ministry for final clearance.

Also efforts are on to assess international passenger and cargo capacity from the airport. According to reports available with the officials, most international flyers travelling through Shamshabad international airport in Hyderabad are from Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari districts.

The airport officials hopes that these travelers will prefer travelling from Gannavaram instead of Hyderabad or Chennai if direct international connectivity is made available. Already the expansion works and creation of new facilities of the airport are on so as to make sure that it can handle international operations.
