Irumudi OTT Triggers Backlash Over a Troubling Hero Elevation

Irumudi OTT release sparks discussion

There is an uncomfortable pattern in recent Telugu commercial cinema. Sexual violence, sexual threats and the fear of such violence are repeatedly being used to create stakes, establish villains or push the hero into revenge mode. Irumudi, Pushpa, Pushpa 2, Peddi and Salaar are some recent examples that have triggered discussions around this issue.

The outrage is not that cinema should never touch such disturbing subjects. Filmmakers can tell serious stories involving sexual violence when there is a genuine narrative purpose. The bigger question is why this particular device keeps returning whenever a film needs to make the hero look more powerful or emotionally justified.

A woman is threatened or victimized, and the male protagonist suddenly gets another reason to fight, protect, take revenge or prove himself.

Some viewers have now raised the same concern about Irumudi especially after its OTT premiere on Netflix. One social media user wrote, “It was disturbing and disgusting for me! I mean it’s 2026 and do films need sexual assault and related things to elevate the Hero of the film?” Another user specifically criticized director Shiva Nirvana, saying, “I hate how Shiva Nirvana uses sexual assault against women to elevate the hero of his film. Irumudi is possibly the worst film I have seen this year.”

These are individual audience reactions, but they point to a larger discussion. Sexual violence creates an instant emotional response. It makes the villain easier to hate and gives the hero an obvious reason to fight back. That makes it an effective commercial shortcut. But repeated use can make a woman’s trauma feel less like her story and more like a tool to strengthen the male protagonist.

A film can depict something disturbing without glorifying it. But when an incident mainly exists to make the male hero look stronger, more protective or more justified, audiences can reasonably question whether the story is actually examining the issue or simply exploiting it for dramatic impact.

And this is not only about Irumudi. The pattern is becoming difficult to ignore.

In 2026, sexual violence does not have to be the default shortcut every time a hero needs an extra push.
