Rajinikanth’s Jailer was a big hit at the Telugu box office in 2023, and now expectations are sky-high for its sequel Jailer 2. The makers are reportedly quoting a massive price for the film’s Telugu dubbing rights in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
According to industry buzz, the team is seeking over Rs. 60 crores for the Telugu rights, although the deal is yet to be finalized. If this deal is finalized, then the film needs to do around Rs. 120 crores gross in the Telugu states just to break even.
There is no doubt that the Jailer brand has built a solid connection with Telugu audiences. Rajinikanth’s screen presence, style, and mass appeal in Jailer continue to attract not just his long-time fans but also younger viewers and family audiences in large numbers.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 was scheduled to hit theatres on June 12, 2026. But due to some delays, it might release in August now.
The sequel follows the story of Muthuvel as he takes on a powerful idol-smuggling syndicate. This time, the conflict intensifies with SJ Suryah stepping in as the revenge seeking villain.
Alongside Rajinikanth, the film features Ramya Krishna, Mirnaa, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and others. Trade experts highlight that the original Jailer collected over Rs. 35 crore net and crossed Rs. 70 crore gross in the Telugu states, making it one of the biggest successes for a dubbed film.
Rajinikanth’s last film Coolie closed its dubbing rights at around Rs. 52 crores. It did not break even, but it delivered respectable numbers.
Leading Telugu distributors are keen to buy Jailer 2. However, the high price means only top players in the distribution space are likely to enter the race, as the deal may be out of reach for mid-level buyers.
