Kaantha BO Shockingly Low: What Went Wrong?

Dulquer Salmaan’s Tamil and Telugu bilingual Kaantha had a slow start at the Indian box office. It collected around Rs. 14.50 crore gross over its first weekend. The film opened with Rs. 4.75 crore on Friday. Instead of showing strong growth, it stayed flat across the next two days. Saturday saw only a small jump to Rs. 5.15 crore. Sunday dropped to Rs. 4.60 crore. This left the film with a weak weekend total.

In Tamil Nadu, the movie collected only Rs. 6.25 crore in three days. This was far below expectations. The trend was also poor, with collections falling on Sunday. This was disappointing because the film was expected to perform well in the state. Dulquer has strong popularity, and the film had the scale to attract viewers.

Kerala performed relatively better because of Dulquer’s strong fan base. Even then, the numbers were not enough to lift the overall performance. In the Telugu states, Kaantha failed to attract crowds in big numbers as the subject and characters were alien to them. Critics and some viewers appreciated the performances, artistic style and the technical quality. But the content did not excite the general audience.

Because of this, Kaantha can be labelled as a box office flop. The lack of weekend momentum means the film has very little chance of recovering in the coming days.

However, many believe that Kaantha may perform better on OTT platforms. Its slow burn storytelling and artistic flavor may appeal more to OTT audiences than theatrical viewers. For now, its theatrical run has clearly fallen short of expectations.
