Unconventional Blockbuster Of The Season

Mammootty’s latest crime thriller, Kannur Squad, has taken the Kerala cinema by storm since its worldwide release on September 28.

The film, inspired by the real Kannur Squad, is an engaging narrative despite its lengthy run time of 160 minutes. It seamlessly blends realism, action, and storytelling to hold audiences captive, transforming it from a crime investigative film to an action-packed crime thriller, especially in the second half.

With a refreshing departure from traditional heroism, this movie has struck a chord with audiences, gaining widespread acclaim and positive reviews from day one.

The movie’s refusal to indulge in unnecessary heroism, dramatic introductions, romantic subplots, or hero backstories is a testament to its unique approach, setting it apart from the norm.

There are quite a few flaws in the film which makes it far from perfect but Kannur Squad serves as a stellar example of a star-studded project breaking conventions while making a significant impact.

At 72 years old, Mammootty continues to defy age, effortlessly portraying ASI George Martin. The cinematic quality of the film, from shot composition to sound design, stands as a benchmark for medium-budget films.

Directed by debutant Roby Varghese Raj, Kannur Squad has crossed the impressive milestone of Rs 75 crore in worldwide box office collections.
