Empuraan Hype: Why Mohanlal, Why Not Mammootty?

Mammootty’s films in the last decade have faced issues with promotions and wide releases. Many of his movies either get limited releases or are not marketed aggressively.

Even when both aspects are handled well—like in Turbo—the film doesn’t always connect with the audience, leading to underwhelming box office performance.

At 73, Mammootty continues to take bold creative risks, opting for unconventional and challenging roles rather than the safer commercial choices many of his contemporaries prefer. His ability to reinvent himself and push boundaries has earned him immense respect from audiences and the industry.

However, despite his dedication to unique storytelling, his films don’t always receive the mainstream attention they deserve.

Unlike Mohanlal’s massive box office hits like Pulimurugan, Drishyam, Lucifer, and now L2: Empuraan, Mammootty’s films rarely break records. Empuraan is creating records that will be tough to break for other films for the next few years.

One of the key reasons could be the lack of aggressive marketing and wide-scale release strategies. While he focuses on delivering content-driven cinema, the commercial push required to maximize theatrical potential is often missing.

If Mammootty’s films received the same scale of promotions and releases as some of his counterparts, they could reach a much wider audience and achieve greater success at the box office.
