Makers Discriminating Direct OTT Releases

Only for those who look closely at the recent releases directly on OTT platforms must have caught this common thread among the films that went for direct release, especially, the Tamil releases.

All the three releases that sought direct digital release had a female protagonist playing the lead and they are Jyothika’s ‘Ponmagal Vandhal‘, Keerthy Suresh’s ‘Penguin’ and Varalaxmi Sharat Kumar’s ‘Danny’ coming soon on a digital platform.

There seems to be a reason why the female-centric movies are choosing digital release and it’s because of the commercial viability of the films and the budgets involved in making them.

Though it may seem rude and gender-biased, male-centric movies are allotted more budgets because of the market value they enjoy and hence, the makers of those movies have to think twice before choosing an OTT release.
