Man drinks his urine to survive in quake rubble

Darwin might have defined ‘survival of fittest’ and ‘natural selection’ many decades ago. Little did he know that Rishi Khanal would become a perfect example to his theory of ‘Survival of the fittest. Trapped in the rubble of earthquake in Khatmandu for four days (80 hours approx.), there had been little chance of survival for the 28-year old.

It was midday. When the earthquake struck the land of snows on 25th April, Rishi Khanal just returned to the second storey of the seven-storey building after finishing his lunch, within no time he was trapped under the debris of the collapsed building. There he lay, without any food and water with 3 corpses with little hope of help from outside.

But he kept banging against the debris and survived drinking his own urine to keep himself alive. Finally someone from the rescue team heard his banging, he was rescued and taken to hospital. That was a miraculous escape from death. Was it only a miracle? Nope. It’s his sheer will power to be alive which helped him stay alive trapped for four days. One could guess the ordeal he must have gone through while waiting for help.
