Married Heroines & Intimate Scenes: Double Standards?

For decades, marriage was almost treated like a full stop in the careers of Indian actress. Many leading heroines either disappeared from films or drastically reduced their work after getting married. That mindset has changed, but another debate has taken its place.

The moment a married actress appears in a romantic or intimate scene, questions about her marriage often become louder than questions about her performance.

That says a lot about how differently an actress’s personal and professional lives are judged.

Cinema requires performers to portray relationships and emotions that may have nothing to do with their personal lives. A married actress doing an intimate scene is still an actress performing a role.

At the same time, there is nothing wrong if an actress decides that marriage has changed her personal boundaries. She may become selective about scripts, avoid certain scenes or change the kind of roles she wants to do. That is equally valid.

The problem begins when either choice is imposed on her.

Recently, Kiara Advani faced brutal trolling for doing intimate scenes with Yash in Toxic. Interestingly, the same scrutiny is rarely applied to married male stars. Kiara’s husband Sidharth Malhotra has done raunchy songs with Tamannaah Bhatia and Janhvi Kapoor, but nobody questioned whether he was respecting his marriage.

This makes the debate less about cinema and more about the different expectations placed on women.

The audience has every right to like or dislike a scene. But deciding what a married actress should or should not do simply because she is married is a different matter.

Marriage can change a person’s priorities and boundaries. But it does not automatically decide what those boundaries should be.

The real question is simple: Is she comfortable with the role, and has she freely chosen to do it?

That choice belongs to the actress, not the audience, social media or outdated ideas about marriage.
