OTT’s Big Blow: Multiplexes Reject This Thriller

OTT platforms have created a new wave of tension in the film industry, especially for theatrical releases.

While OTT services initially grew slowly, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated their dominance, making them a preferred choice for many viewers.

This shift has left several filmmakers and producers frustrated, including Bollywood star Aamir Khan, who recently voiced concerns about the OTT impact.

In the latest turn of events, Malayalam blockbuster Officer on Duty has faced an unexpected hurdle ahead of its Telugu and Tamil releases scheduled for March 14, 2025.

Despite bookings opening across regular theatres, major multiplex chains have refused to screen the film. The reason? The Malayalam version, released on February 20, 2025, is set to hit OTT platforms by the end of this month.

With such a quick digital release window, multiplexes believe the film won’t attract enough footfall to justify screening it.

Mythri Movie Distributors LLP is actively working to resolve the issue and ensure the film’s release across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana multiplexes. Whether these chains will reconsider their stance remains uncertain.

Directed by Jithu Ashraf and starring Kunchacko Boban in the lead role, Officer on Duty is a thriller now gearing up for its Telugu and Tamil debuts amidst this distribution roadblock.
