Can Mythri Fix Tollywood’s Small Film Problem?

Small films are releasing in large numbers in Tollywood, but very few are making a real impact at the box office. Mythri Ravi Shankar, who is participating in the Film Producers Council elections as part of the Progressive Panel, says three to four films are coming out every week, while the success rate is only around 10 to 20 percent.

For producers putting their own money into these projects, that is a serious problem. By the time a film reaches theatres, it is often too late to correct mistakes in the story, casting or making. For a small producer, fixing such issues after production can also mean additional financial pressure.

Mythri Ravi Shankar has suggested bringing experienced producers into the process much earlier. His proposal is to create a support system where senior producers review small films at the script stage and offer suggestions on the story, technical aspects and overall execution before shooting begins.

The idea makes sense on paper. A weak point identified at the script stage is far easier to fix than after the film is completed. But the success of such a system will depend on how the feedback is handled. Too many opinions could also interfere with a filmmaker’s original vision.

A script review cannot guarantee a hit, as audience taste, execution, promotions and release timing still matter. But if experienced producers can help small filmmakers avoid major mistakes before production, the idea could give these films a stronger starting point.
