Tollywood Wants Nandi, But Where Are Investments?

At the recent Gaddar Awards event in Hyderabad, senior film personalities like Chiranjeevi and R. Narayana Murthy once again raised a familiar demand. Andhra Pradesh should revive the Nandi Awards. Their point is emotional and valid. Telugu cinema, they argue, deserves recognition from both Telugu states.

But this demand has now triggered a sharper debate.

The question being asked is simple. Should a state that is still focused on rebuilding its capital, attracting investments and stabilising its economy prioritise film awards, especially when the industry itself is not investing there?

For decades, the Telugu film industry has built its strength in Hyderabad. Studios, post production houses and business networks continue to expand in Telangana. The ecosystem is strong and continuously growing.

In contrast, Andhra Pradesh remains largely outside that ecosystem. There are very few serious attempts from the industry to build infrastructure in cities like Visakhapatnam or Amaravati. Even for shootings, AP is not the first preference in many cases.

This creates a visible imbalance.

On one side, the industry is asking the government led by N. Chandrababu Naidu to revive Nandi Awards. On the other side, there is no matching commitment to invest in the same state.

Leaders like Pawan Kalyan have openly invited the industry to expand into Andhra Pradesh. But the response has been limited.

There is also a structural point that often gets ignored. Major global recognitions like the Academy Awards are run by independent industry bodies, not governments. That raises a valid question. Should film recognition depend entirely on state governments, or should the industry itself take more responsibility?

From the government’s side, the hesitation looks both political and practical. With figures like Nandamuri Balakrishna, Pawan Kalyan and Naga Babu in the ruling ecosystem, any awards could be seen as favouritism. Add to that the Telangana comparison with Gaddar Awards, and the issue becomes even more sensitive.

But the deeper issue is economic reality.

Andhra Pradesh is currently focused on rebuilding, attracting industries and creating jobs. In that situation, a direct question is being raised. Should recognition come before participation?

This is not about rejecting Nandi Awards. It is about context.

If the industry wants awards from Andhra Pradesh, there is also an expectation that it should contribute to the state’s growth. Even a few major investments in studios, training centres or film hubs in Visakhapatnam or Amaravati could change the conversation.

Until then, the gap remains. Awards may belong to Andhra Pradesh in sentiment, but the industry’s investments still belong to Telangana in reality.
