Nani’s Paradise: Telangana Portrayal Problematic?

Telangana’s cinematic identity is evolving, with films now embracing local culture, dialects, and traditions more than ever.

For years, Telugu cinema was dominated by Andhra-centric storytelling, but actors like Vijay Deverakonda, Siddhu Jonnalagadda, Vishwak Sen, and directors like Tharun Bhascker and Balagam Tillu have shifted the narrative.

They’ve unapologetically brought Telangana’s dialect, lifestyle, festivals, and slang to the forefront, fueling a wave of raw and authentic storytelling.

However, this newfound representation has sparked debates. While many appreciate the authenticity, a pattern has emerged: films often associate Telangana characters with alcohol, meat consumption, foul language, and rugged behavior.

From slang-filled dialogues to aggressive portrayals, many people on social media argue that these films reinforce stereotypes rather than break them.

Now, Nani’s latest film The Paradise, directed by Srikanth Odela, is creating a strong buzz. Going by the glimpse video released today, the film looks gritty, raw, and violent, not just in action but also in tone and language.

While some are praising its bold approach, others are criticizing its stereotypical portrayal of Telangana people. Many feel the film shows them as drunkards, foul-mouthed, meat-eating, uncultured, and filthy.

Srikanth Odela did the same thing in his last film Dasara and is now repeating it in The Paradise. This has sparked a debate on social media.

One major issue is the expletive-filled voiceover from the protagonist’s mother. It sets up Nani’s character as a leader of an outcast tribe compared to crows. The use of the cuss word “La**ja Koduku” by a woman has upset many. They believe it reinforces negative stereotypes.

Another concern is the Telangana accent in the film. Some say it feels unnatural and forced which is, however, a common problem in Telugu cinema. Many films fail to capture the real essence of the dialect.

Despite the controversy, the teaser has successfully grabbed attention. The film hits theaters on March 26, 2026.
