Nikhil’s Swayambhu: OTT Platform’s Shocking Demand?

OTT platforms are now becoming very selective when it comes to buying film rights, and sometimes they even demand additional conditions if they strongly like a project. Recently, an interesting situation reportedly happened with an upcoming pan India film that is expected to release in April. After watching the film’s content, the streaming platform ZEE5 reportedly demanded not only the OTT rights but also the North Indian theatrical rights. However, those theatrical rights had already been sold to another distributor, so the deal could not include that condition.

Industry experts believe the film being discussed might be Nikhil’s pan India film Swayambhu. The period drama features Samyuktha Menon and Nabha Natesh as the female leads. The movie is directed by Bharath Krishnamachari and produced by Pixel Studios with presentation by Tagore Madhu.

The makers have not yet officially confirmed the release date. According to the latest reports, the team is considering April 17 as the potential release date. However, the final decision may depend on the completion of the film’s VFX work. Once the visual effects are finished, the OTT platform is expected to watch the final output and then decide on the release window.

Sources say that ZEE5 is likely to acquire the OTT rights if the final output satisfies them. Since Swayambhu is being made on the highest budget of Nikhil’s career, the OTT deal is expected to be very important for the film’s overall recovery.

The promotional material released so far has generated some curiosity among the audience, but it is not enough for a film reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 80 crores.

The usual promotions alone may not be enough to push the film to the next level. For the film to succeed commercially, it may need something standout in promotion to improve the buzz. Since the film carries a big budget, even after a good OTT deal it may still need to collect around Rs. 75-80 crores gross at the box office to be considered safe. That will not be an easy target unless the film opens strongly and receives good word of mouth.
