NRI divorces 4 weeks wife via WhatsApp

An NRI from Kerala got married to a 21 year old girl. He went to Dubai after 10 days of their marriage. Three weeks after that, he sent a Talaq message to her indicating divorce. He reportedly told her that she was like an apple and he had already tasted it. So he did not want her anymore

The groom who is now in Dubai has got a dowry of Rs 10 lakhs and also given him 80 sovereigns of gold. On Monday she approached the women’s commission’s adalat in Pala, Kottayam and lodged a complaint. Oral talaq delivered through new media platforms like Skype, text messages, email and Whatsapp is causing a big worry for the community.

Now the women’s commission asked the department of non-resident Keralites’ affairs to find the woman’s husband, a 27-year-old. They also questioned the validity of the WhatsApp Talaq. In a recent study conducted in 10 states in the country, 92.1% Muslim women voiced their dissent against the discriminatory practice of triple talaq and are seeking its ban.
