Dragon OTT Only After 8 Weeks: Real or “Cheating”?

NTR’s upcoming pan-India film Dragon, directed by Prashanth Neel, is already one of the most awaited releases in Indian cinema. After delivering blockbusters like KGF and Salaar, Neel’s collaboration with Jr NTR has raised huge expectations. The film stars Rukmini Vasanth as the female lead and is produced by Mythri Movie Makers.

The latest buzz, however, is not about the film’s action or scale but its OTT release plan, which has sparked debate across the industry. Reports suggest that the makers have signed a special deal ensuring Dragon will premiere on Netflix only eight weeks after its theatrical release.

This move stands out, as most South Indian films follow a four-week OTT window, while Hindi films stick to the traditional eight-week model. Industry insiders reveal that Netflix paid a record amount for the digital rights, agreeing to the longer window to boost Dragon’s theatrical run, especially in North Indian multiplexes, which demand an eight-week gap before OTT streaming.

However, trade circles and fans are divided. Some suspect that only the Hindi version may follow the eight-week window, while the Telugu and South Indian versions could release online earlier similar to the strategy seen in Mirai. Critics argue that such split releases confuse audiences and affect trust among theater owners.

Fans on social media have accused the producers of “smartly misleading” multiplexes by promising an eight-week delay for nationwide screens but planning earlier digital drops for regional versions. Whether the Dragon team holds back all versions or only the Hindi one remains to be seen.

For now, all eyes are on Dragon not just for its action and scale, but also for how it reshapes OTT release strategies in Indian cinema.
