The Bollywood film industry and film exhibitors are facing immense challenges with April 2024 being one of the worst months in recent memory.
Several high-profile releases, including Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Maidaan, LSD 2, Do Aur Do Pyaar, and Ruslaan, failed to do even minimum business, leading to financial strain on theaters.
The poor performance of these films, combined with a lack of releases during upcoming elections, has made survival difficult for theaters, especially single screens. Many have been forced to reduce showings and lower ticket prices in a bid to attract audiences.
Last year, Shah Rukh Khan’s films single-handedly boosted the theatrical business with Pathaan and Jawan, but Bollywood is now back to square one, with consecutive disasters each week.
In this challenging landscape, hopes are pinned on upcoming releases like Kalki 2898 AD and Pushpa 2. These pan-India films from the Telugu industry have generated significant excitement, particularly Pushpa 2, which is expected to be a 500-crore blockbuster in Hindi, setting the single screens on fire.
Kalki 2898 AD is projected to open with 15-18 crores in Hindi regions, while Pushpa 2 is anticipated to be a sure-shot 50 crore opener.
However, theater exhibitors may have to suffer another 6-7 weeks of difficulties before these releases can potentially revive the industry.
