In the first quarter of 2024, the Indian movie landscape has witnessed a remarkable trend: Malayalam cinema has taken center stage, surprising many.
The standout films of the year so far include Manjummel Boys, Hanu Man, Chamikila, Aavesham, Bramayugam, Premalu, Tillu Square, Laapata Ladies, Maidaan, Bhakshak, Anweshippin Kandethum, among others.
What’s truly noteworthy is that over 50% of these standout films hail from the Malayalam industry, marking an exceptional achievement.
Not only were these films praised by critics, but they also stormed the box office, emerging as massive blockbusters. Their films like Premalu and Manjummel Boys even became hits in Telugu dubbed versions.
Tollywood contributed with notable films like Hanu Man and Tillu Square, which not only garnered critical acclaim but also achieved significant commercial success, crossing the 300 and 100 crore marks respectively.
In Bollywood, films such as Laapata Ladies, Maidaan, and a handful of others showcased quality storytelling. However, despite their merit, none managed to strike big at the box office. Bhakshak and Chamkila turned out to be good movies on OTT.
Regrettably, the Tamil film industry has had a lackluster year so far, with no standout offerings. Highly anticipated films like Lal Salaam, Ayaalaan, Captain Miller, and Siren failed to make an impact, facing harsh criticism from both audiences and critics alike.
