Oppenheimer: Mixed Reviews in India – Why?

Christopher Nolan is one of the biggest Hollywood names in India. His films tend to have a huge patronage from the Indian folk. Same was the case with his latest release, Oppenheimer, which released in India today.

Oppenheimer had excellent advance sales and the RottenTomatoes opening score was also around 96%, which is a very encouraging number.

However, going by the early trend, Oppenheimer has opened to largely mixed reviews in India.

The primary reason is that the Nolan directorial is essentially a conversational drama. 2/3rd of the film is filled with dialogue. This doesn’t quite sit well with the Indian folk.

The larger section of the Indian audience crave for action. At least, they want something exciting happening through the course of the film. Sitting and watching over 2 hours of conversation in a 3 hour film about a character(Robert Oppenheimer) the vast majority of the viewers barely know isn’t our cup of tea.

While Nolan’s name might’ve bought openings and good advance ticket sales for Oppenheimer, the onus was on the film to deliver in order to continue the momentum. But the extensive and elaborate drama and dialogue portion of the film has now led to a mixed word of mouth. It has to be seen how the film will fare over the weekend now.
