OTT Fight: Finally, Disney Beats Netflix!

Finally, Walt Disney edged past the biggest OTT platform Netflix with a total of 221 million streaming customers. It also announced that prices for customers who seek to watch Disney+ or Hulu without commercials will become costlier.

Disney will hike the monthly cost of Disney+ without ads to $10.99 (38% increase) in December.

In just five years, Disney has overtaken Netflix in total customers and added 14.4 million subscribers, beating the 10 million figure expected. This was possible as the platform acquired streaming rights of the Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ms. Marvel.

At the end of the June quarter, Disney had 221.1 million streaming customers, while Netflix had 220.7 million subscribers.

Disney plans to offer an ad-supported subscription for $7.99/month to attract new customers from December. This is the same plan for the ad-free version, currently.

The company decreased its long-term subscriber forecast for Disney customers as they lost the streaming rights of IPL in India.
