This Pongal, the Tamil film industry witnessed a clash between Dhanush’s Captain Miller and Sivakarthikeyan’s Ayalaan. Both movies set records with the highest budgets and pre-release business for their respective stars. The fight for tier-2 supremacy got intense between Dhanush and Sivakarthikeyan, making it intriguing to see who would come out on top.
In Tamil Nadu, Captain Miller raked in approximately Rs 6 crore on its opening day, while Ayalaan managed a start of around Rs 3.25 crores. Unfortunately, both films didn’t meet expectations, with public reports being less than encouraging.
Captain Miller, despite Dhanush’s stellar performance and a solid cast, falls short due to a simplistic plot that only picks up in the second half. The film’s direction and editing make it lethargic, and the overall lack of entertainment dampens its appeal making it a bore fest.
Ayalaan, although carrying a noble message, fails to make a significant impact, appearing too generic. The VFX efforts and alien visuals are commendable, but the elaborate stunt sequences become tiresome. Director R Ravikumar’s detailed storytelling makes the film feel outdated despite technical brilliance. The family audience might embrace the film, but the testosterone-filled youth might not connect with the film.
In summary, this Pongal season turned out to be disappointing for the Kollywood industry as Captain Miller and Ayalaan turned out to be below-average films.
